Born from innovation and a passion for pushing the limits of heat, the California Reaper is a remarkable creation by Dr. Steve Bender at Tyler Farms. One of the first peppers developed at Innovation Acre, a pioneering project dedicated to breeding unique superhot varietiesāthis fiery pepper is a cross between the infamous Carolina Reaper and Jay's Peach Ghost Scorpion. As it ripens, the California Reaper transitions from light green to a striking peach-yellow, a visual warning of the intense heat within. Its gnarled, wrinkled texture hints at the fire it carries, delivering an immediate, lingering burn that challenges even seasoned chili lovers. But beyond the heat lies a surprising depth of flavorāa bold fusion of fruity sweetness, citrus notes, and a subtle smokiness. For those seeking more than just raw spice, the California Reaper offers a complex, exhilarating experience. With its blistering heat and layered taste, this superhot variety stands as a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship behind every pepper at Tyler Farms.
The Apocalypse Scorpion is a chili that lives up to its ominous name, offering an explosive heat experience that few dare to challenge. Originating from Italy, bred by the Italian growing organization AIASP (Associazione Italiana Amatori e Sostenitori del Peperoncino), with the goal of creating a pepper that could rival the worldās hottest. The pepper ripens to a vibrant red, adding to its fiery persona. The texture is rough and bumpy, characteristic of many superhot varieties, which only adds to its intimidating look. Beyond the intense heat, the Apocalypse Scorpion has a surprisingly complex flavor. It offers a fruity, slightly sweet taste that can be appreciated by those who dare to venture beyond its initial burn. This combination of extreme heat and subtle sweetness makes it a favorite for those looking to create powerful hot sauces or add a serious kick to dishes. Due to its extreme heat, the Apocalypse Scorpion is often used sparingly in hot sauces, salsas, and other spicy condiments. A tiny amount can transform a dish, adding both heat and flavor. Itās also popular among chili enthusiasts for use in spicy challenges, where only the bravest dare to consume it whole. Whether you're a chili grower, hot sauce maker, or spicy food enthusiast, this pepper is a fiery addition to any collection. Grim Reaper is remarkable pepper comes from the talented pepper breeder Kevin Bane. The story behind it is equally special: Kevin received the initial seeds for this variety from his late friend, Donnie Armstrong, shortly before Donnie passed away. Kevin shares that these Grim Reaper seeds sat in a hot garage for three years before being planted, and out of the batch, only one sprouted. Though originally expected to be red, the plant produced chocolate-colored fruit. Kevin calls this "one mean looking chili." Given that majority of the Grim Reaper fruits have spikes and tails. The fruit "look like they want to hurt you and they will." This unique pepper is a tribute to Donnie Armstrong, who was an architect for the US government and lived in Western Tennessee. Beyond his work, Donnie was a passionate advocate for animals, running a stray cat rescue. He was known for his generosity, sharing seeds. Donnie may have passed away from cancer, but his legacy burns on through the Grim Reaperāa truly spectacular pepper that keeps his memory alive. Now, Kevin is honoring Donnieās memory hoping others will experience the heat and flavor that Donnie passionately cultivated. The flavor is very chocolatey, a bit earthy, floral, paired with knock-your-socks-off heat. "Chocolate love powder," Kevin calls it. "Brutal stuff. I love it."
